Many people over consume salt or salty foods. To counterbalance that, our bodies require a proper balance of potassium. It is not safe to take potassium supplements so the best thing to do is to consume more potassium rich foods such as bananas, potatoes, beets, oranges etc. Once we lower our sodium and add more potassium foods, as well as foods high in magnesium (such as leafy greens and avocado and even dark chocolate), our joints feel healthier, less inflammation(for those with arthritis) and in general we feel better and have better blood pressure.
